The Double
Richard Ayoade's new Movie premiered at the London film festival and I was able to catch up with him and some of the cast
Richard Ayoade
What was the atmosphere like on set?
It was horny, primarily charged erotically and kind of quite cruel.
Did your experience directing Submarine change how you directed The Double? Do you feel your style has grown?
I mean I’m older but submarine I adapted from Joe’s (Joe Dunthorne) book and I kind of wrote that on my own just consulting with Joe to see if I was really wrong, with this it was Avi (Avi Korine) idea to adapt it and I worked with him and it was great experience. Was great not writing alone in a room.
Was filming one actor playing two parts a challenge?
Technically hard to do as when there are scenes with both in you can’t actually see it live so you take a lot of chances with shots and you don’t see the final scene together until editing. It’s made the scene a lot less hard then it was as the real task was at editing.
Jessie Eisenberg
Jessie Eisenberg’s new film The Double had its world premiere at the 57th Annual London Film Festival we caught up with him for a few words.
How was it working with Richard Ayoade?
You know Richard is a really funny person but as a director he so unbelievably thoughtful that he is never at a loss for ideas, even though he so funny he is still comfortable creating scenes that are serious and emotional, and that’s what this movie is emotional and funny.
Why did you choose the double?
This was the most interactive acting opportunity that anybody could hope to do- cause I’m doing two roles side by side. A wonderful opportunity to do something different and to work with Richard was just a dream he is so creative in creating these total unique worlds and giving actors the great opportunity
How did you find playing two characters in the same environment? Were there any challenges in creating them?
It was a unique challenge but fun thing to do, you don’t get that opportunity often even in acting school there is no technology to recreate that affect.
Craig Roberts
Tell us about your character in The Double?
I play a suicide detective, it was good I didn’t have to do much Richard was like just do it so I did it and that was it. I don’t know I haven’t seen it I may be cut for all I know.
The Double is directed by Richard Ayaoda, was this a factor in you choosing to be a part of this film?
It’s an amazing cast it just shows how much people believe in Richard Ayoade he is such an amazing guy such a talent, this cast is just amazing its very cool. Look at everything he does he’s a genius. I think Richard has a dark sense of humour he really does- but dark is funny. I kind of was surprised but he’s very funny if you have seen his earlier stuff like Garth merengie its very dark but very funny at the same time. He’s a very clever guy. He is going to be around for a long time I reckon
Has Richards directing changed since you worked with him on Submarine?
I didn’t really work with him much in the movie, I’m only in two or three scenes I think I cant really remember but from what I’ve seen in the trailer it looks a lot darker. I just know he is a very clever guy and shouldn’t be surprised about how he will be; I think it will be different every time.
The film is about meeting your double, your doppelganger. What would you do if you met yours?
We would hate each other cause I hate myself, so we would mutually hate each other. If I met an exact copy of myself I don’t know what I would do.
Your character Adam in Being and Becoming Human was really great would he be something that you would return to if you had the chance?
I don’t think would ever happen, but I would. The part was so open to doing anything. At the time I was going through a stage where I wanted to try new things and experiment was very cool to do it.
What do you have coming up next?
I have just done a movie with Seth Rogan called neighbours that’s coming out and I’m doing 22 Jump street. Something different not as dark.
