Starfury: Warp 1 Review
This weekend I finally returned to Starfury, this year had been my longest gap from Starfury. It’s been a busy year . This was also my 20 anniversary of attending Starfury with my first one in November 2005.
I’m a huge Star Trek fan and in the last few years the fandom has been let down with the franchise having much representation at the UK events.
Starfury has had the occasional Trek guests but this was their first dedicated event.
The guest list was a mix of new Trek series - Picard and Strange New Worlds (SNW) and classic guests from Deep Space Nine (DS9) … the Next Generation was to be represented but the guest had to cancel.
Starfury is a weekend event, it’s based in a hotel and is as much about the community experience than just meeting the actors. It has a structure of photos in the morning , autographs in the afternoon with panels in between. Each night has parties and other fun activities.
This format can be jarring for new con goers who are used to the signing event ; get in get stuff done and get out. This is not that. It’s a lot calmer and evenly paced.
Many are put off by the ticket price as they only seen £130 and think that’s just the entry price . Not realising that also included free autographs from the regular guests play 2 and half days of activities.
The guests this weekend were Terry Farrell, Nicole deBoer who both played Dax on DS9. Ed Speelers- Jack Crusher , Peyton List - Narrissa from Picard. Jess bush - Nurse Chapel, Mia Kirshner- Amanda Grayson ( Spocks mom) on Discovery/ SNW alone with writer Jim Swallow and producer Lolita Fatjo
There were a few cancellations but for a first event theme it was a solid start.
I hadn’t met Mia or Ed before so they were my main reason to attend,
Mia Kirshner - is so adorable, she appears timid but when you speak to her she opens up and was really focused on making sure she signed things how you wanted , engaging in photo poses etc. Mia doesn’t do many events so it was nice to have that interaction with her.
Ed Speelers - he is a force of nature, cheeky and controlling of the room. He is a lot of fun and really was the heart of the show event.
Peyton List - I’ve met her a few times at varied events and she is always so lovely and appreciative for fans meeting and talking with her
Jess Bush- is a real trooper , she can straight from set arriving late and still managed to meet everyone and give all fans her full energy.
Nicole DeBoer- it was good to hear her on stage , having met her many times over the years and her character not having as much time to grow on screen it was good hearing her side.
Terry Farrell - a Star Trek Powerhouse - she is queen of the Trek con. She knows how to work it . Fun and open panel, taking extra time on autographs to make sure they were all done to the attendees liking. Having really open discussions at the tables and not holding anything back.
Jim Swallows- good guy and some informative discussions in his panel about the writing process
Lolita Fatjo- really nice and so many stories to tell.
The panels were great , the guests all brought a lot of humour to the stage along with a lot of behind the scenes stories and many things said you don’t usually expect to hear.
The cosplay contest was also top tier , the fans put so much effort into their costumes and it really helped build the atmosphere for the parties.
It was an amazing event and looking forward to Warp 2 in 2026 Trek is finally back
rating 9/10
